Auckland City is built on a series of dormant volcanos, and is one of the few cities in the world to have splendid harbours and beaches. It lies between two oceans, the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Manukau Harbour to the south-west.  Known as the City of Sails, as yachting is a favourite pastime.
