Dunedin
Otago
New Zealand
Dunedin is New Zealand's first city, and is the second largest in the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The picturesque Otago harbour and hills around Dunedin represent the remnants of an extinct volcano. The city suburbs extend out into the surrounding valleys and hills, onto the isthmus of the Otago Peninsula, along the shores of the Otago Harbour, and the Pacific Ocean. Nestled at the head of the Harbour on the east coast of the South Island is the lively city of Dunedin.
Scottish history and its own unique culture has resulted in the city having the largest concentration of late 19th century Victorian and Edwardian architecture in New Zealand. Its name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
The city is full of superb holiday activities and attractions, has a diverse student population, excellent shopping, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.
Dunedin has a diverse economy, which includes manufacturing, publishing and technology-based industries as well as education, research and tourism. The city's most important activity centres around tertiary education and has an internationally recognised university which hosts New Zealand’s principal medical school.
